This was done by overcoming four obstacles: What then was its purpose? It was to make it possible for us to return to God’s presence, become more like Him, and have a fulness of joy. 1 This was the mission of Jesus Christ-this was His Atonement. It required a being who was sinless who had infinite power over the elements-even death who possessed a boundless capacity to suffer the consequences of all our sins and ailments and who, in fact, descended beneath it all. It was motivated by an incomprehensible love for each of us. What then is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? In one sense, it is a series of divine events that commenced in the Garden of Gethsemane, continued on the cross, and culminated with the Savior’s Resurrection from the tomb. It is what gives hope and purpose to our lives. It is indeed the most supernal, mind-expanding, passionate doctrine this world or universe has ever known. 505–6.At this season of the year we particularly rejoice and reflect upon the Savior’s Atonement. Cannon | “Knowledge, without the Aid of the Spirit of the Lord, Not Sufficient to Save,” Millennial Star, 8 Aug. It is plain that it is they who have transgressed, and thereby driven the Spirit of the Lord from them and at the very time they say the Church of God strayed, they themselves were guilty of transgression. This has been the case in numerous instances in the past. They may not deny that the Work was ever true, or that the Elders were ever the servants of God, but they will place a limit and say, ‘Up to such a time the work was true and the Elders were all right, but, after that, they went astray,’ – that very period being the time at which they themselves had committed some act or acts to forfeit the Spirit of God and kill the growth of that knowledge which they had had bestowed upon them. If they lose the Holy Spirit through their transgressions, from that moment their knowledge respecting the Work of God ceases to increase and becomes dead a short time only elapses before such persons deny the faith. The Saints should not imagine that because they know the truth and the Work of God at the present time, that they will always know these things and therefore be able to stand. Topics: Missionary Work & Preparation, Testimony Holland | Missionary Work and the Atonement We must always remember that these investigators, every man, woman, and child, were among the valiant who once overcame Satan by the power of their testimony of Christ! So when they hear others bear that witness of Christ’s saving mission, it has a familiar feeling it brings an echo of truth they themselves already know.”Įlder Jeffrey R. “So the fact of the matter is investigators are not only hearing our testimony of Christ, but they are hearing echoes of other, earlier testimonies, including their own testimony of Him, for they were on the side of the faithful who kept their first estate and earned the privilege of a second estate. There, in an earlier place, these same people heard this same plan outlined and heard there the role that Jesus Christ would play in their salvation… A missionary’s testimony invokes a great legacy of testimony dating back to the councils in heaven before this world was. One is that when you declare the truth, it will bring an echo, a memory, even if it is an unconscious memory to the investigator, that they have heard this truth before-and of course they have. “There are several reasons for bearing testimony. Topics: Book of Mormon, Restoration, Testimony Holland | "Safety for the Soul," Conference October 2009 Disregard all of that, and tell me whether in this hour of death these two men would enter the presence of their Eternal Judge quoting from and finding solace in a book which, if not the very word of God, would brand them as imposters and charlatans until the end of time? They would not do that! They were willing to die rather than deny the divine origin and the eternal truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.”Įlder Jeffrey R. Never mind that their little band of followers will yet be “houseless, friendless and homeless” and that their children will leave footprints of blood across frozen rivers and an untamed prairie floor.9 Never mind that legions will die and other legions live declaring in the four quarters of this earth that they know the Book of Mormon and the Church which espouses it to be true. “Never mind that their wives are about to be widows and their children fatherless. In this their greatest-and last-hour of need, I ask you: would these men blaspheme before God by continuing to fix their lives, their honor, and their own search for eternal salvation on a book (and by implication a church and a ministry) they had fictitiously created out of whole cloth? “As one of a thousand elements of my own testimony of the divinity of the Book of Mormon, I submit this as yet one more evidence of its truthfulness.
